Fitness Business

I’ve been an athlete my whole life.  An injured athlete often and still I trained hard and harder and harder still.  In the past 3 years since starting this gym, I’ve been looking for different information.  Looking for better ways to improve fitness levels.  Looking to increase my knowledge and skill around body mechanics and movement.  I’ve been looking for ways to train and decrease injury, increase mobility and flexibility.  I’ve been looking for ways to age with more efficient body movement versus a decreased range of mobility.

I’ve been looking for ways to help people through the repetitive plateaus experienced in all training fads.  How can I keep people not only for business reasons, but for their health and contribution to the fabric of our community.  Push-ups, burpees, and jumping jacks are tasks that are easily acclimated to and I want to know where to take people beyond the standard calisthenics.

Recently I’ve been feeling in a boxing skill rut.  I teach at least 4 classes a day and train individual a few hours on top of that.  Basics and repetition are important as is creativity.  I want to pass on my knowledge to boxers and gym members in a passionate and exciting way that motivates them to personally take charge of their fitness.  I want to hit these ruts and come out even more energized and ready for the next level.

This openness and passion for learning has introduced me to several influential movement practitioners, many who reside here in the Seattle area.  I encourage you to check them out, but if you don’t, no worries, because we will incorporate all their lessons in our classes.

Naudi Aguilar of Functional Patterns, AJ @_thebodymechanic from the Athletic Training Institute,  MTI Physical Therapy and all the way from Canada, Eric Wong.

I’ve been studying and implementing their techniques in classes already and there will be much more to come.  After all, why train if you aren’t going to get more leverage, more relaxed strength, increased overall fitness and a greater range of movement with ease?

Lastly, I’m studying and personally implementing the work of Wim Hof, the Iceman.  He is a pioneer in breath work and cold immersion techniques.  While we may not all be dipping into the Sound together (or maybe we will) you can count on us to find ways to help you with your breathing efficiency.

  1. I’ve studied Hof too and was very interested in cold training. It certainly helped my recovery when I was powerlifting. Unfortunately, his book is poorly written and is not a particularly good resource, even on his basic techniques. That said. I would LOVE to incorporate that yogic breathing into my boxing training. I am so stoked on your breadth and curiousity, Coach. Please never lose that!
